Whether you're updating your website or writing it for the first time, the task ahead can be daunting!
What am I writing? What do I want to say? Who am I appealing to? What pretty pictures can I look at?
So, did you do what I did?
Go look at other peoples websites and see how they did it?
Here's my 5 hot tips on what to look at when you're updating or writing your website. I learned from experience!
1. Don't look at what everyone else is doing
Pssst ... what if I told you that all you got from this was copying their mistake?
It's true. I've had people say that other professionals have said their website was great, but it broke every connect-with-your-client rule and so didn't bring in the customers.
But, boy, did it look great!
So, by all means look at what they're doing ... but don't copy them unless they're following tips 2 to 5!
2. Spend some quality time thinking about who your client is
If you talk to everyone you end up talking to no one.
Imagine you're at a conference. The speaker is doing their thing "blah blah blah" - eventually your brain gives up.
But imagine you sit down, you've got an abstract telling you what you're going to hear, so you know you're listening to something you want to hear. The speaker stands up and says "Hi (insert your name here), I know you want to hear about (insert your problem/concern/issue here). So I'm going to tell you (insert what they're going to tell you here)".
Best. Conference. Ever.
They spoke directly to you, addressed issues you knew you were going to hear the answer to, and provided the answer.
It's exactly the same with your website. Get to know your client, tell them you know what their problems are and tell them how awesome you are at giving the answer.
3. Don't be everything to everyone
I know it's tempting
"But I have my own practice now and I need to see clients to pay the bills, so I'll see ANYONE and EVERYONE."
This goes back to tip 2; getting to know your client. Speaking to a select group will mean you speak to a more targeted audience more effectively. Those who you're more likely to connect with, and provide what they need (a product or service they'll buy).
It took me A LONG TIME to realise this. No, actually I realised it years ago but it took me A LONG TIME to put it in to action. I was scared of cutting out people who would pay me! All I could see was my $$ going down. But actually it meant my $$ increased as I could talk much more effectively to those people who really did need me!
4. Make it ALL about them
Really. Everything. It should all be about your client.
Even the stuff about you! The about page is a controversial area of any web page.
Is it the boring stuff, the bragging bit or just a contact page?
In fact, what it is is an opportunity to show your clients how you connect with them on their problems or issues. But not in a salesy way, but in an honest, get to know you way. Using your voice.
5. Think about what you want your website to be
Remind yourself of your core business.
My first website was primarily an information site. My second was telling people about my services. My third was a one stop (overwhelming) shop for pretty much everything (and got out of hand quickly). Now we're back to services!
Before you go downloading all those fancy add-ons: calendars, appointment bookers, carts etc, think about what you actually want your website to be.
Can you shoot people off to other sites to download e-books, courses or videos? Do you really need them hosted on your site?
It'll help keep things smooth, simple and less expensive. AND it can help your webpage load more quickly.
